Mom had a very good night's sleep last night -- netting about 12 hours in all. She then took a shower in her bathroom, which she very much enjoyed. The rest of the day was filled with many naps and some small meals.
She and I spent the afternoon watching "Becoming Jane" and her local doctor, Eileen Gliber, paid her a visit in the evening. She gave mom some helpful tips about cleaning out her discharge tubes (which are connected from under her armpits to two plastic bottles; these have to be emptied twice a day).
Overall, I would say Mom is in pretty good shape, considering she had major surgery only a few days ago. She is managing her pain with medication and lots of rest. Her physician advised against any visitors right now, so please do not take it personally if a request to visit is politely declined by me or Rig.
Mom is enjoying all the thoughtful words of support that have come through via snail mail, e-mail and voice mail. She apologizes for not replying to every message, but hopes that everyone understands that she focusing on her recovery right now and may not be up for thanking you individually at this time.
I would encourage folks to post messages in the comments section of this blog. I know Mom has been reading them and appreciates all the kind words.
She's about to go to bed and is looking forward to another big, fat night's sleep. Rig has been a champion and is taking great care of Mom.
A friend of mine who is an avid soccer fan and a huge Landon Donovan
supporter sent me this email over the weekend: I’m still just stunned over
the Donovan...
Thanks for the update Chris, very glad to hear everything's on track. Each day gets a little better, doesn't it? As hard as her body is working to heal itself, sleep's the best thing in the world. Thinking of you all, Cathy
